The role of government and other organisations in promoting girls’ involvement in sport
The process of engaging girls in sport has been talked about for many years, we even had a whole roundtable discussion about the very subject last year, with Women In Sport and other guests.
As touched upon in that session, there are numerous benefits to promoting this type of participation from a young age. Taking part in sport helps to build the self-esteem of young girls whilst also encouraging teamwork and leadership skills, and promoting physical and mental health.
Despite these benefits, although girls and women’s sport is becoming more popular, females are still underrepresented in sports, and this is where the role of government and other organisations comes in.

What role does the government play in engaging girls in sport?
Governments have a pivotal role to play in promoting girls’ involvement in sports. Government’s can provide funding for sports programs and facilities, as well as implement policies and regulations that encourage girls to participate.
Governments can also provide support and resources to schools and other organisations, educational or otherwise, that promote girls’ sports, and they can work to eliminate any gender-based barriers that may prevent girls from participating in sports.
The Role of Sports Organisations
Sports organisations also play an important role in promoting girls’ involvement in sports. They can offer programs and events specifically designed for girls, and they can work to increase the visibility of girls in sports.
By providing opportunities for girls to participate in organised sports, these organisations can help to develop their skills, build their confidence, and promote their overall health and well-being.
Are you doing your part in engaging girls in sport?
As we’ve touched upon above, sports organisations and those in charge have to do their part to promote the involvement of girls in their sports, and ensure that the sessions are engaging, and inclusive for girls of all skill levels.
How do you improve your sport for girls?
Our ‘Engaging Teenage Girls in Sport’ eLearning course on Accelerate Sport might be a good place for you to start if you’re looking to engage more girls in your sport.
During this online course you will explore the current state of play for teenage girls in sport and exercise; from their participation and attitudes towards it, to the complex barriers that get in the way.
You will gain a deeper understanding of teenage girls’ lives and relationship with sport and uncover why sport needs to change. You’ll also discover how you can make it more inclusive so that it meets the needs of different girls, not just the sporty few.
Importantly, you will hear from teenage girls themselves, as well as those who work with them and are making a difference to their lives through sport.
Watch the below video for a preview of what to expect from the course:

The Role of Schools in engaging girls in sport
Schools also play a significant role in promoting girls’ involvement in sports. They can provide a safe and supportive environment for girls to participate in sports, and they can offer physical education programs that encourage girls to be physically active.
Schools can also work to eliminate gender-based barriers that may prevent girls from participating in sports, and they can provide opportunities for girls to try a variety of different sports and physical activities.
In Summary
In summary, the involvement of girls in sports is important for their physical and mental health, as well as their overall well-being.
Governments, schools, and sports organisations like yours all have a role to play in promoting girls’ involvement in sports, and by working together, we can all create a supportive environment for girls to develop their skills, build their confidence, and lead healthy, active lives.
