Each person should have as good a chance as the next to take part in your sport.<\/p><p><em>\u201cAnd that&#8217;s what equal opportunities is. It&#8217;s not about just giving someone a chance. It&#8217;s being able to put people in a position where they can take the opportunity.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Leroy Rosenior, former professional footballer.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h2><strong>What are the benefits of diversity in sport?<\/strong><\/h2><p>When an NGB or club values its members by creating an inclusive and equitable environment, those members respond with kindness, respect, loyalty, commitment and enthusiasm for their sport and community. Some of the benefits of EDI in sport include<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Promotes equality and fairness<\/h3><p>When everyone is given an equal opportunity to participate, regardless of their background or identity, it creates a level playing field where everyone can compete based on their skills and abilities.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Encourages innovation and creativity<\/h3><p>When people from different backgrounds come together, they bring unique perspectives and ideas that can lead to new and exciting ways of playing and competing.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Enhances performance<\/h3><p>Studies have shown that diverse teams perform better than non-diverse ones. By bringing together athletes with different strengths, skills, and experiences, teams can create a more well-rounded and dynamic approach.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Builds community<\/h3><p>By embracing diversity, sports communities can become even stronger and more inclusive, providing a space where everyone can feel like they belong.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>What are the challenges of promoting diversity in sport?<\/strong><\/h2><p><em>&#8216;There are so many reasons to promote equality and diversity within your sport. Did you know that Two-thirds (64%) of LGBTQ+ people had experienced anti-LGBT+ violence or abuse.&#8217;<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Hate Crime Report<\/strong><\/p><p>As you can imagine, there are also challenges to promoting equality and diversity in sport. These can include:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Bias and discrimination<\/h3><p>Unfortunately, bias and discrimination can still be prevalent in sports communities, making it difficult for people from certain backgrounds to feel welcome and included.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Lack of representation<\/h3><p>When certain groups are underrepresented in sports, it can be difficult to create a truly diverse and inclusive community. This is where extra help is important. We\u2019ll explain more about our Equality and Diversity in Sport course towards the end of the article.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Access and resources<\/h3><p>Finally, access and resources can also be a barrier to promoting diversity in sport. For example, athletes from lower-income families may not have the same opportunities or resources as those from more affluent backgrounds, making it harder for them to participate and compete.
